Interview with Nicola Mooney: Teacher of the Month

Updated: Oct 31, 2024

Nicola Mooney, Deputy Head of Pembridge Hall, was one of the first teachers we approached about TimeGivers. Supported by the amazing Mrs. Banks, both immediately saw the importance and value of what we do at TimeGivers and they quickly brought us into the school. From the start, it was clear that giving back was embedded into their school culture and curriculum, and they made us feel part of that as soon as we walked through the doors. This openness has created a strong partnership that has allowed us to integrate our programmes in a meaningful way.

Thanks to Nicola's ongoing support, we’ve been able to run consistent volunteering trips out of the school, all of which have been so well documented. The impact forms we send for the students and teachers to complete are always returned quickly, allowing us to gather essential feedback on how these activities are positively impacting the student’s mental health and wellbeing. Nicola’s incredible organisation has been key in proving the significance of our work in schools. She is a true advocate for TimeGivers, deeply understanding of our mission and the benefits it brings to her students and the community.

Q: How did you first hear about TimeGivers?

A: Lovely Kate approached us as a school, and Sophie (our Head) and I met with her to discuss the fantastic charity that is TimeGivers! The enthusiasm that Kate shared for the project was infectious and we started our TimeGivers journey as a school in September 2023.

Q: What does TimeGivers mean to you?

A: TimeGivers has helped expand our pastoral offering for our girls. It has supported our charitable giving as a school – rather than always focusing on monetary donations (of which our parents and girls are always extremely generous), it focuses on the gift of time.

Q: Why do you think TimeGivers is beneficial for students?

A: TimeGivers has enabled our girls to volunteer in a meaningful and structured way: the links TimeGivers have with the nearby community are invaluable.  Our girls are able to volunteer, in an age-appropriate way, learning valuable life lessons and starting to understand the endorphins you can feel from helping others.

Q: Do you remember a particularly special moment?

A: For me it has to be the first ever TimeGivers ‘trip’ that we ran: our Year 4s visited the Nourish Hub (Autumn 2023).  Being part of the volunteers for the morning, and witnessing the girls giving back, was incredible. (I never knew potato washing could be so joyful to watch!)  They still ask me (a year on) when they can go back and help!

Q: Why do you like working with TimeGivers?

A: TimeGivers are fantastic to work with. Their knowledge, passion and organisation is second to none. We are very proud to be a TimeGivers school!
