Derna has become a much-loved member of the TimeGivers volunteer team since joining us through a connection with one of our partner schools.

Introduced to TimeGivers by fellow volunteer Hellen, Derna brought with her years of experience as a nanny and trained nursery school teacher. Having worked in a nursery for 15 years, she quickly became a natural fit for our school-based programmes.

Whether she's leading baking clubs, supporting arts and crafts activities or working alongside students with additional needs, Derna brings creativity, patience and enthusiasm to every session. She has a fantastic ability to engage young people and help them understand the importance of giving back to their communities.

Finding Purpose Through Volunteering

Derna first heard about TimeGivers when the charity began working with the school attended by one of the children she nannies.

Reflecting on her volunteering experience, she said:

"It has given me a sense of purpose and accomplishment. I have become more engaged in my community and have gained a wonderful group of new friends."

Supporting Young People to Give Back

Derna believes that volunteering gives young people valuable life skills while helping them connect with the world around them.

"TimeGivers helps young people connect with their communities, enabling them to feel accomplished and boosting their confidence. It teaches teamwork, the importance of giving back, life skills, social awareness and develops a greater sense of empathy."

Memorable Moments

One of Derna's favourite parts of volunteering is seeing children grow in confidence.

"There's often one child whom the teacher mentions usually doesn't engage, but during one of our sessions, that child participated wonderfully."

She particularly enjoys watching children's excitement when they donate something they have created themselves and realise the positive impact they can have on others.

Why TimeGivers?

When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering with TimeGivers, Derna said:

"TimeGivers is an incredible charity with a powerful vision that positively impacts children and their community. Every time I volunteer, I leave with a smile on my face."

We're incredibly grateful for Derna's continued support and the energy, care and creativity she brings to every TimeGivers session.
