Volunteer Spotlight: Zoe Sparks

Zoe has been part of TimeGivers since our earliest work at Garratt Park Secondary School, our first partner school in Wandsworth supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Her consistent presence every Monday morning has become a cornerstone of the programme. With calm energy, patience and a warm smile, Zoe provides steady support for Year 11 students and helps create a safe, encouraging environment where they can thrive.

Over time, her impact has become clearly visible - not just in the creative projects she supports, but in the confidence and trust she helps build with students who often find connection challenging.

From gently encouraging reluctant students to try painting for the first time, to patiently building relationships week after week, Zoe meets young people exactly where they are, with kindness and consistency.

Making a Lasting Difference

Zoe’s commitment has helped shape what is possible at Garratt Park. Her weekly sessions have supported students to explore new activities, develop skills and experience moments of success they may not otherwise have had access to.

Alongside this, Zoe herself has grown through the experience, embracing new challenges and adapting flexibly to the needs of the school and students.

We are incredibly grateful for the care, reliability and positivity she brings to the TimeGivers community every week.

Volunteer Reflection

Zoe first heard about TimeGivers through a personal connection:

"I heard about TimeGivers through the proud wife of one of their volunteers!"

When asked about her experience, Zoe shared:

"Honestly, I sometimes feel like I benefit more than the children! I really enjoy working outdoors in a team on projects I wouldn’t usually have the chance to do. It’s incredibly fulfilling."

Supporting Young People

Zoe believes that simply experiencing new activities can have a meaningful impact on young people:

"Many of the young people we work with haven’t had the chance to try things like planting, building, or larger scale painting. Just being exposed to these activities is valuable. But more importantly, I think they benefit from getting time away from the classroom - especially on difficult days. It gives them a chance to reset and feel supported."

A Memorable Moment

One of Zoe’s most special moments came after months of working with a student:

"When one of the teenage boys who we'd worked with for a couple of months ran over with a smile on his face. That moment really filled me with joy and appreciation."

"I love volunteering because it's truly an honour to help these young people. Being part of a caring and dedicated team trying to make a real difference in their lives is rewarding and life affirming."

Zoe’s dedication, warmth and consistency embody the heart of TimeGivers, and we feel very fortunate to have her as part of our journey.
