Club Volunteer Spotlight: Amelia and Ninya

Our Giving Back Clubs continue to play an important role in creating consistent, accessible volunteering opportunities for young people within school settings. Led by dedicated Adult Volunteers, these sessions give students a chance to build confidence, creativity and practical skills while contributing to projects that support their local communities.

This month, we spoke to Ninya and Amelia, two of our brilliant Sewing Club Volunteers in Wandsworth, about their experience supporting young people through their Sewing Clubs.

Getting Involved

Both volunteers were initially drawn to TimeGivers through a desire to find flexible, meaningful volunteering opportunities that fit alongside their schedules.

“I had been wanting to find a charity to volunteer with but was finding it hard to find something that would work with my schedule and that was reasonably flexible. Then my friend Amelia asked if I wanted to join her at a Giving Back Club with TimeGivers. It sounded perfect and I could do it with a good friend!”

Running a Giving Back Club

When asked about their experience supporting the Sewing Club, both reflected on how positive and accessible it has been:

“It has been a hugely positive experience. It took me out of my comfort zone but very quickly made me realise it was very straightforward and a lot of fun.”

Impact on Young People

One of the most rewarding aspects has been seeing the progress and confidence of the young people attending the club each week:

“It's lovely to see the children grow in confidence in a very short space of time. There are lots of different personalities but they all seemed to gain benefit from the sessions. It was especially rewarding to watch the quieter children come out of their shells.”

A Standout Moment

A particularly memorable moment came during a follow-up session when students began supporting one another:

“I think when we did the club a second time, having a few of the same children return and then seeing them offer to help the children that were struggling with their creations. Such a great thing to see.”

A Message to Future Club Volunteers

For anyone considering getting involved with a Giving Back Club, their advice is simple:

“Just do it! Such a simple but worthwhile thing to do, you won't regret it.”
